Design Inspiration

I am often reminded in my daily life that nothing is truly new; everything is a derivative of something else and especially in interior design where trends are ever evolving and there are so many different platforms to showcase those trends. I will think that I have an entirely unique idea and come to find out a designer in Toronto has done it, and probably one in California or New York as well. It can be tempting to always try to “one-up” yourself finding new and innovative ways to design a space. It is equally tempting occasionally to fall back on what has worked before, re-create the familiar because it’s easier, quicker and sometimes less expensive. I have come to realize that for me, the answer lies somewhere in between. I have found that I design better with inspiration. I may take parts and pieces from 5 images to come up with a final look, which ends up being unique purely because I had those different influences, but found ways to group them together differently. Scrolling through Instagram, Houzz, and Pinterest keeps my passion for design alive and immediate, because my tastes are always evolving based on what I’m seeing. So, my advice to either homeowners, designers, and especially builders is to find an idea, change it in ways to make it your own, and always go with your instincts and maybe it’ll be you who inspires someone else.
